Rail train Derails

Wheatland County mapCALGARY – Seven cars of a Canadian Pacific Rail train carrying hazardous materials derailed in Wheatland County west of Carseland on Thursday afternoon.

CP Rail spokesperson Martin Cej said the cars contained ammonium nitrate—used in fertilizers—which is classified as a dangerous good.

Chief Administrative Officer of Wheatland County Alan Parkin said the derailment was under control as of 4:30 p.m. and no liquid had leaked from the cars.

Parkin said hazardous materials officers as well as CP Rail crews are working to right the cars on site, almost 10 km west of Carseland. One farm residence was evacuated less than a kilometre away from the scene. He said there was no risk to the public; Cej added the road blocks were so crews could continue the investigation rather than due to a safety issue.
